  • How to Choose the Right German Shepherd Breeder: Avoid Puppy Mills, Pet Shops and the Like

There are various kinds of breeders and one should learn how to choose the right German Shepherd breeder before getting a German Shepherd. The first thing one should learn about the breeder is his or her reputation and learn all the details about their German Shepherds. One should also learn whether the breeder screens for genetic diseases that can adversely affect the German Shepherd and whether the breeder keeps records about veterinary matters as well as breeding records. A sign of a good breeder is that he or she will inform the buyer about both the good and bad points of the German Shepherds and also are able to provide good care of their dogs.

Check the Dog’s Living Quarters and Type of Care Given

Another important factor that needs to be considered when you learn how to choose the right German Shepherd breeder is that the breeder allows the buyer to check out where the dogs live and what kind of care that is given to the dogs. This would mean that the breeder is genuine and not out to make fast money at the expense of the buyer and quality of the dogs. Also, make sure that the breeder gives a written health guarantee with the dog or puppy that they sell and will offer help and advice with regard to the dogs they sell at all times.

A good breeder would also be helpful to the buyer and assist the buyer with finding a home for the dogs that they sell, especially if the original buyer cannot look after the dog. One more tip one should consider when learning how to choose the right German Shepherd breeder is to ascertain whether the breeder belongs to a local or national breed club or not. Also, the aim of the breeder should be to only breed dogs with the intention of improving the bloodline of the German Shepherd and nothing else.

One should also undertake a lot of research about the German Shepherd before deciding to approach a breeder as this will arm one with the required information that is necessary in choosing the right German Shepherd breeder. In addition, one may also be well advised to visit several different German Shepherd breeders and ascertain which of them has the right breed and with which breeder one feels most comfortable to deal with.

One should avoid backyard breeders, puppy mills, and pet shops when locating a right breeder. Backyard breeders do not have the kind of knowledge required to undertake proper and serious breeding and very often, dogs sold here may be of dubious quality. Puppy mills are places that mass produce quantities of dogs and are nothing more than pens, cages, and structures the dogs are kept in. Pet shops may seem like an appealing idea but they are not the right place as dogs sold here may very often suffer from genetic diseases. Having chosen the right German Shepherd breeder, one would then need to learn how to choose the German Shepherd puppy and learn all about German Shepherd puppies.
