  • What to Expect with a German Shepherd: Intelligence, Companionship and Much More

Anyone interested in acquiring a German Shepherd would certainly like to know much more about what to expect with a German Shepherd. On acquiring a German Shepherd, one can expect it to act as a sentry, police dog, tracker, drug dog, search and rescue member as well as a guide dog. The origins of this breed were found on German farms where, in the 1890s, its breed became standardized thanks to a German cavalry officer named Max Von Stephanitz. This has led many to expect that a German Shepherd will perform as a superior herding dog that also has an elegant appearance. One can expect a lot of loyalty from the German Shepherd and it is a good family friend as well.

A Fearless Guardian and Wonderful Watchdog

The German Shepherd is a fearless guardian and its imposing frame makes it ideally suited to act as a deterrent and coupled with its tenacity, strength and sense of sniffing out things that are amiss or people that act suspiciously, it makes an outstanding guard dog. As it excels in being trained and picks up things very easily one can expect with a German Shepherd to teach it how to do limitless things which very often, do not require extensive training.

One can also expect with a German Shepherd to begin its training program when it is still relatively young and one should of course, not overdo its exercising. As for its imposing frame and demeanor, one may expect it to grow to a height of at least 25 inches for males and the males should weigh approximately 75 to 80 pounds while females are a bit smaller sized.

Keeping in mind the size as well as high levels of activity that the German Shepherd is used to, one should expect it to like living in homes with yards and a lot of daily exercising is a must for these creatures. In addition, their dense coats with straight and close black and tan colored hairs are shed heavily so expect to do a lot of vacuuming of the carpets and the interiors of the house if it happens to be staying indoors. In addition, the German Shepherd requires regular as well as thorough brushing.

A German Shepherd sheds its coat heavily and one may expect it to blow its coat at least twice a year. A German Shepherd is not for those who are faint hearted and they require time as well as training and one should expect to know how to handle them and establish a bond, which once formed, would last all their lifetime. One may also expect a lot of aloofness from their German Shepherds but there are few breeds that will make a better companion for the family.

Since one expects the German Shepherd to be an intelligent creature they can be trained to learn to do various things such as open doors and pick up things with their mouths and the strong structure of their muzzle makes it easy for them to learn these tasks. One can expect high quality in their learning abilities and its love for children and its excellent capabilities as a watchdog should endear them to a family.

Now that one has an idea about what to expect with the German Shepherd it only requires finding out more about different German Shepherd breeders and how to go about acquiring a well bred German Shepherd from them.
