  • The Good, the Bad and the Ugly Personality of the German Shepherd

An inhabitant of the Northern regions of Europe, the German Shepherd has been with us for hundreds of years and though they originally were used in protecting flocks of sheep and are very often, still used for such purposes, their use in modern times include doing police K9 work such or that of a seeing eye dog. The personality of the German Shepherd is very distinctive and they are found to be direct as well as courageous, though not too aggressive.

    Self Confident, Though Aloof

When identifying what is good, bad or ugly in the personality of the German Shepherd one would notice that they are very self-confident though at times, aloof and so one would not expect them to make friends immediately or indiscriminately. This is good for the German Shepherd since it needs to be trained to perform tasks that do not lend to its being overly friendly. One would not want a police or army or blind guide German Shepherd to be a friendly animal as the work that it is supposed to perform precludes such a personality trait.

However, a required trait in the personality of the German Shepherd is that it should show signs of being approachable and it should also be able to stand its ground without undue emotion and also be able to impress others with its non-aggressive confidence. Another personality trait of a German Shepherd is that it has a keen sense of what is right and what is wrong and it is also able to sniff out things that seem to be amiss.

Being a loyal animal as well as a dedicated dog are other handsome personality traits of the German Shepherd and these are qualities that stand the German Shepherd in good stead, especially when it comes to training as well as teaching them obedience. There are also some German Shepherd bloodlines that are hard and businesslike while others remain calm and are pretty mild in their personality.

The personality of the German Shepherd shows in the amount of energy they have and this may range from being very laid-back to being extremely vigorous. This is an athletic breed that needs plenty of exercise and a brisk walk everyday along with some amount of all-out running would suit the personality of the German Shepherd very well.

Some German Shepherd bloodlines are known to have a skittish personality while others may be exceptionally sharp. The personality of the German Shepherd requires that it be allowed to socialize as this helps in developing a stable as well as sound and confident personality. A key personality of the German Shepherd is that it has an uncanny ability to spot when someone behaves abnormally and this requires that they be able to socialize as without socialization, the personality of the German Shepherd may tend to become paranoid or at the very least, suspicious of everyone and it may cause it to take to biting people. The key traits in the personality of the German Shepherd are their strength, athleticism, and natural-looks and they thrive on challenges as well as love to exercise.

Being stern and imposing animals, the personality of the German Shepherd lends to their being perceived as effective deterrents and they are exceptionally versatile and can be trained to do virtually anything. The grand impression that the German Shepherd makes on others would naturally whet the appetite to know more about this wonderful breed and thus, one would like to know about what to expect with a German Shepherd.
