  • History and Origin of the German Shepherd: A Brief Insight

The first exhibition of the German Shepherd seems to be in a show in Hanover in the year 1882, which is about the time that this breed first appeared. These animals were unlike the German Shepherds that we have come to know in modern times and were much like mongrels in appearance, having coarse coats as well as short tails. The history and origin of the German Shepherd dates to the end of the 19th century and the breed that we have come to recognize actually did not appear till after the Second World War.

Originates from Crossbreeding Working Sheep Dogs

According to information available about the history and origin of the German Shepherd, this breed came about as a result of cross breeding of working sheep dogs that emanated from rural Germany by an ex-cavalry officer who went by the name of Max von Stephanitz and who wanted a working animal fit for herding and which was able to trot for long periods. Accordingly, a standard of breed was formulated and the first breed show happened in 1889 after which, according to the history and origin of the German Shepherd, it became well entrenched all across Germany and in 1906, these dogs were then exported to USA.

The import of the German Shepherd into the US contributed greatly to its popularity and is presently one of the most sought after breeds that make ideal pets as well as a working force in the military and police. These dogs are also referred to as Alsatians in the UK, mainly because they were bred in France in an area known as Alsace and also because, after the Second World War, the name 'German’ had many negative connotations and thus the name Alsatian was preferred.

Throughout the history and origin of the German Shepherd, one is told about the amazing intelligence as well as its having an undying devotion to its master. This breed constantly requires company as well as stimulation to give off their best. However, being a working breed, they may often have characteristics that may be difficult to cope with, but it is nevertheless, a loyal, steady as well as self-confident and courageous and willing animal that is neither shy or nervous or over-aggressive.

Anthropologists have seen remains of dogs that resemble the German Shepherd as long as 8,000 years ago. The history and origin of the German Shepherd may thus actually indicate that these dogs had been used for hunting and protection in the distant past and, with the passage of time, there have been more breeds of the German Shepherd that have evolved and different breeds came about to meet different requirements.

Now, that the German Shepherd has become a part of our lives, one should not only know about the history and origin of the German Shepherd, but also need to delve a bit into the German Shepherd temperament, which with its powerful jaws as well as strong teeth, can be trained to attack and release on command. The German Shepherd temperament is evident from it sense of loyalty as well as the emotional bond that it shares with its master.
